How to view a fragmentation analysis

How to view a fragmentation analysis One complaint about Vista's built in defragmentation program is that it doesn't give you much information. That's true of the graphical interface, but you can use the command line defrag utility to view an analysis of the amount of fragmentation on a per-drive basis. Here's how: 1. Click Start | All Programs | Accessories 2. Right click the Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator 3. Click Continue at the UAC prompt if you're logged on with an administrative account, or enter administrative credentials if you're logged on as a regular user 4. At the command prompt, type defrag : -a The output will show you the volume size, amount of free space, largest free space extent and percent of file fragmentation. It will also tell you whether you need to defragment the drive.
